Joel Richard Petals 2 is the second edition of the Petals series from Joel Richard, the private label of Joel Beth and Richard Trachtenberg, the principals of Pacific Edge Wine and Spirits in Agoura Hills, California, an importer known for independent Scotch bottlers A.D. Rattray and Wm Cadenhead. Petals is their showpiece tequila, and the bottle is the point of difference: each one is a hand-painted ceramic decanter made by local artisans, so no two look exactly alike, and the release is a limited edition. Inside is an organic extra añejo made from organically farmed blue Weber agave grown in Amatitán, Jalisco, in the Tequila Valley. The spirit is double distilled and then aged in small casks, which increase the wood contact during the long rest, and it spends at least the three years required for the extra añejo category in barrel before it is bottled. The Joel Richard approach, carried over from their whisky business, is small hand-chosen lots rather than a mass-market brand. Pour it neat or in a snifter, and keep the ceramic bottle on display after it is empty.
