John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
John Anthony Truchard grew up in the vineyards his parents Tony and Jo Ann planted in Carneros in 1974, began managing vineyards while in college, and released the first commercial John Anthony Vineyards wines in 2003 before opening his downtown Napa tasting room in 2010. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from southern Napa sites he owns or farms in Carneros, Coombsville and the Oak Knoll District, cooler bench and hillside vineyards where long hang time builds flavor without excess ripeness. The wine is aged in French oak barrels and bottled at 14.5% ABV. The 2018 is a juicy, mouthwatering Cabernet showing ripe blackberry and plum with dark chocolate and tobacco, carried by earthy, gravelly tannins with medium to heavy grip, and the house style ages gracefully; older vintages still show fresh fruit more than a decade on. With a few years of bottle age now behind it, this one is drinking well with grilled lamb chops, braised beef cheeks or a hard aged cheese.
