Joseph Phelps Freestone Pastorale Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
In 1999 Joseph Phelps planted about 100 acres near Freestone, on the cool western edge of Sonoma County, after a search for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sites that began in the late 1990s, when few vineyards existed in the area. Pastorale is one of the vineyard-designate wines made from that estate. Bottled at 14.1% alcohol, it sits a little riper and fuller than the winery's Quarter Moon bottling, though the house style stays focused on freshness. The Freestone Pinot Noirs from Phelps are known for a floral, red-fruited nose with savory herbs, balanced acid and tannin, and flavors that run from strawberry and cherry to pomegranate, with a lingering finish of boysenberry and cherry and a touch of toasted oak. Expect a polished, medium to full-bodied wine with fine tannins and a long finish. Pair it with roast turkey, pork tenderloin with cherries or a wild mushroom pappardelle.
