Journeyman Distillery was founded in 2011 by Bill Welter inside the Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, Michigan, a building put up in the late 1800s by E.K. Warren to make featherbone, his innovative stay for corsets, along with buggy whips. Journeyman's spirits are certified organic and kosher, and the distillery has grown from small 150- and 1,100-liter stills to a 5,000-liter still installed in 2015. Buggy Whip Wheat is named for the other product that came out of the Featherbone Factory, and it is made entirely from organic Michigan wheat, single distilled and bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof). A 100% wheat mash is rare in American whiskey, and it gives a softer, rounder spirit than rye- or corn-heavy whiskeys. Journeyman describes it as having a soft sweetness and smoothness reminiscent of an Irish whiskey on the palate. It scored 94.5 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020 and 92 points at the 2022 Melbourne International Spirits Competition. Easy to drink neat or on ice, and a good choice for anyone who likes wheated bourbon and wants to try the grain on its own. For the barrel-proof take on the same whiskey, look for Corsets, Whips & Whiskey.
