Junipero Smoked Rosemary Gin comes from Hotaling & Co. in San Francisco, the home of Junipero, the gin that kicked off American craft gin when it launched in 1996. It is built on the original Junipero recipe, a juniper-forward dry gin made in small traditional copper pot stills and bottled unfiltered at the house strength of 49.3% ABV (98.6 proof). For this edition the distillers add fresh rosemary and bright citrus to the botanical bill, and get the smoke not from a smoker but from lapsang souchong tea steeped in fresh water before distillation, which gives the spirit a soft campfire character without any harshness. Hotaling describes a strong juniper core supported by gentle smoke on the nose, and a full-bodied palate with juniper and bright citrus up front that opens into a smoky, herbal complexity on the finish. It was named Best Gin at the 2024 Esquire Spirit Awards and took a Double Gold and 98 points at the 2024 San Francisco International Spirits Competition.
