Kilchoman Machir Bay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Kilchoman Machir Bay is the flagship of Islay's farm distillery, founded by Anthony Wills at Rockside Farm in 2005 as the first new distillery on the island in 124 years. Named for the wild beach beside the distillery, it is a marriage of roughly ninety percent ex-bourbon and ten percent ex-Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 92 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored.
Clean and coastal, Machir Bay opens with brine, seaweed and a driftwood bonfire on the nose with citrus zest, vanilla and a subtle floral lift, then a briny, smoky palate of golden syrup, cooked pear, toffee and a hint of dark chocolate, finishing maritime and mineral with lingering peat. The Road to Dram rated it good, and it has become a modern Islay classic. A young, vibrant peated malt that gives Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10 a real run for their money.
