Kings County Moonshine is the original product of Kings County Distillery, which Colin Spoelman and David Haskell founded in 2009 in a 330-square-foot Brooklyn warehouse before moving to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2012, making it New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery since Prohibition. It is a legal corn whiskey made from 80% New York State organic corn and 20% malted barley, open-fermented and double distilled on copper pot stills from Forsyths of Scotland and Vendome of Kentucky, then bottled unaged at 80 proof (40% ABV) without ever touching oak. The distillery explains that moonshine historically meant illegally made spirit, but American corn whiskey can legally be sold unaged, which lets this bottle nod to that tradition. Kings County calls it a purist's spirit, comparable to silver tequila or white rum, and recommends it neat or in a martini with dry vermouth and olive brine. The high malt content draws more on Scotch whisky than typical bourbon. The distillery was named Distillery of the Year by the American Distilling Institute in 2016.
