Kings County Straight Empire Rye is Brooklyn-made rye from Kings County Distillery, New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery since Prohibition and a founding member of the Empire Rye movement, a collaboration among New York craft distillers to define a rye category rooted in the state's whiskey heritage. Empire Rye rules require at least 75% New York-grown rye; Kings County uses 80% Danko rye grown in Ancramdale, New York, and 20% English malted barley, milled, fermented, double pot distilled and aged on site at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in a true grain-to-glass process. It rests at least three years in charred oak barrels and is bottled at 102 proof (51% ABV). Breaking Bourbon reviewer Eric Hasman described an earlier batch as a dark, rich rye that drinks more like an aged bourbon, with caramel, cinnamon, tangerine, toasted oak, brandy-soaked cherry and dark chocolate. The distillery's rye program has earned Best in Category at the 2023 New Orleans Spirits Competition, Best Craft Rye Whiskey at ASCOT 2021 and a Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
