Kirk and Sweeney takes its name from a Prohibition-era schooner caught rum-running off the New Jersey coast in 1924 with 12,000 bottles aboard, and the vintage-shaped bottle honors that era. Gran Reserva Superior is the top of the range, produced at the Bermúdez distillery in the Dominican Republic — one of the Caribbean's longest-operating rum houses — from hand-harvested sugarcane processed into grade three blackstrap molasses, then aged in a mix of American and French oak barrels with repeated dumping, blending, and re-barreling over the years. It's a blend of rums aged between 6 and 25 years, bottled at 40% ABV. The critical hardware is real: 94 points from Wine Enthusiast, which found bold caramel and toffee aromas, brown sugar and salted caramel with raisin on the palate, and a gentle finish of allspice, cocoa powder, and clove drying to walnut; and 97 points from The Tasting Panel. Master of Malt describes rich sherried dates and raisins with dried oak, vanilla, and toasted nuts. Worth knowing honestly: this bottle replaced the beloved age-stated 23 Year around 2020, and longtime fans are divided — many love it, some miss the old bottle.
