Kirk and Sweeney Reserva Rum
Reserva is the entry point to Kirk and Sweeney's core range, and the brand's name carries a genuine piece of Prohibition history: the Kirk and Sweeney was a wooden schooner caught rum-running off the New Jersey coast in 1924 with 12,000 bottles aboard, and the vintage-shaped bottle is a nod to those smuggling years. The rum comes from the Bermúdez distillery in the Dominican Republic, one of the Caribbean's longest-operating rum houses, made from hand-harvested sugarcane processed into grade three blackstrap molasses, then aged in a combination of American and French oak barrels with the distiller dumping, blending, and re-barreling through the years. Reserva is a blend of rums aged between 3 and 14 years, bottled at 40% ABV, and it effectively replaced the old age-stated 12 Year when the brand relaunched its lineup around 2020. Wine Enthusiast scored it 91 points, finding a copper penny hue and toasty vanilla aroma opening into oak, brown sugar, and cocoa with a mouthwatering saline hint, and a long, rounded finish of allspice, cinnamon, and a flicker of cayenne heat. It's the Reserva that forms the base of the pepper-finished Burning Mast. Smooth enough to sip over a cube, structured enough to anchor a Rum Old Fashioned or a serious dark daiquiri — and the best value in the range.
