Kunde Family Estate Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Kunde Family Estate traces its roots to 1904, when Louis Kunde bought the Wildwood Vineyard in Kenwood; the family still farms an 1,850-acre ranch that climbs from the Sonoma Valley floor to 1,400 feet, the largest contiguous estate in the appellation and certified sustainable throughout. Since 2021 the winery has been part of Adair Family Wines, with longtime winemaker Zach Long continuing the estate-grown program. The Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is drawn from the estate's red loam hillside blocks, which the winemaker credits with giving the fruit its firm foundation, and is aged in French and American oak to round out the tannins. At 14.5% ABV it opens with aromas of raspberry, cassis and baking spice, then delivers rich tannins, black cherry and coffee flavors and a well-structured finish. The winery suggests it for summer barbecue, from burgers to spare ribs, and pairs it with Hawaiian-style short ribs; it is equally at home with a weeknight steak or a hard aged cheese.
