Lacuesta Reserva is the barrel-aged red vermouth from Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta in Haro, the town at the heart of Rioja Alta. The winery was founded by Félix Martínez Lacuesta, who served as the first president of La Rioja's national association of viticulturists and wine producers, and it has stayed family-owned ever since; vermouth has been part of its production since 1937. The house recipe macerates up to 24 aromatic plants and herbs cold in a white wine base, following the traditional formula. For the Reserva, the vermouth then spends seven months in new French oak barrels from the Allier forest with a medium toast, which deepens the color and adds a layer of wood to the botanicals. It's bottled at 15% ABV. The producer describes an intense red color, sweet, herbal and slightly balsamic aromas, and a full-bodied, flavorful palate, with the bitter, caramel and aromatic character of classic Spanish vermut. The producer serves it chilled with an orange slice and an olive. It also makes a richer Manhattan or Negroni than most red vermouths.
