Lagavulin 12 Year Old is the cask-strength cult favorite of Diageo's annual Special Releases, a series that has run since 2002 and gives whisky lovers a rare look at Islay's most revered south-coast distillery at full natural strength. The 2022 edition, part of the "Elusive Expressions" collection with its Flora and Fauna-inspired label, was matured in refill American oak casks to let the spirit speak.
Bottled at 114.6 proof (57.3% ABV), non-chill-filtered, it is Lagavulin in its purest form: intense peat smoke, sea salt and lemon on the nose, then a huge, oily palate of medicinal smoke, sweet malt, green apple and cracked pepper, finishing long, smoky and warming with a splash of water opening up hidden sweetness. Each year's release is a one-time bottling prized by collectors, and the 12 Year is the one Islay fans hunt for.
