Leopold Bros Three Chamber Rye Whiskey Holiday Edition 2022 is a special winter bottling of the most historically significant rye being made in America today. Todd Leopold of Leopold Bros in Denver, Colorado rebuilt a three-chamber still from pre-Prohibition manuscripts, a piece of equipment no one had used in nearly a century, because it produces a heavy-bodied, oily rye that column stills cannot. The mash is 80% Abruzzi rye, a heritage grain favored by early American distillers, and 20% barley malted on Leopold's own floor, the largest traditional floor-malting room of any distillery in the United States.
The Holiday Edition is bottled in bond at 100 proof and aged five to six years. The Right Spirit describes it as gentle, layered and antique, with soft malt, dried herbs and lavender, cinnamon sticks, caramel and buttered rye bread on the nose, tangy dry malt and bright caramel with a splash of cream on the palate, and a finish of rye bread and lavender dipped in crystallizing honey.
