Loch & Union Barrel Aged Gin takes the Napa distillery's American Dry Gin and rests it in ex-Chardonnay barrels from the surrounding wine country, then bottles it at 43% ABV (86 proof). Loch & Union's base gin is a twelve-botanical dry gin (juniper, coriander, angelica, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, cubeb, damiana, chamomile, caraway and orris root among them) that Drinkhacker rated an A-, praising its sharp juniper, citrus peel and long, complex herbal finish.
The Chardonnay barrel adds a soft, buttery roundness and a hint of white-wine fruit and toasted oak without burying the juniper, a fitting signature for a Napa gin. It is built for stirred drinks: a barrel-aged Martinez, a white Negroni or an Old Fashioned made with gin, and it is worth sipping neat to see how the wine cask and the botanicals play together. A limited, distinctly Californian bottle.
