Los Vecinos Del Campo Ensamble No. 1 Mezcal
Los Vecinos del Campo, "neighbors of the field," is a collaboration between the Sazerac Company and Casa San Matías, the historic tequila house led by Carmen Villarreal, working with a group of 10 mezcalero families in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca (NOM O96X). The agave is hand-harvested and slow-roasted underground for mezcal's characteristic smoke, crushed with traditional stone equipment, naturally fermented in wooden vessels, and double distilled in small batches in copper pot stills. The brand launched with its Espadín in late 2018 and followed with a Tobalá and this Ensamble No. 1 in 2019. The Ensamble blends two agave species: 90% maguey Espadín with 5% Barril and 5% Madrecuishe, both forms of Agave karwinskii. It's bottled at 45% ABV. The official notes describe aromas of chamomile, dill pickle and roasted agave, with green tea, hemp, palm frond, green pea and black pepper, and a palate of black pepper, honey and soy sauce with a low degree of oiliness. It's a savory, herbal ensamble that rewards slow sipping and makes an interesting step up from single-agave Espadín, and it holds its own in stirred mezcal cocktails.
