Mal Bien Zacate Limón Mezcal
Mal Bien Zacate Limón Mezcal is a lemongrass mezcal from the Morales family of San Dionisio Ocotepec, a mezcal-making village in Oaxaca. The recipe was created by the late maestro mezcalero Lucio Morales López, originally as a gift for his wife, and today his son Oscar Morales García makes it using the family's traditional methods. The base is espadín (Agave angustifolia), the most widely planted agave in Oaxaca, roasted, fermented, and distilled twice in copper stills. The lemongrass, zacate limón in Spanish, goes in twice: freshly cut stalks are added to the still before the second distillation, so the aromatics are carried through with the spirit, and then a little more lemongrass is macerated in the finished mezcal to deepen the aroma and give it a pale tint. It is bottled at 40% ABV. Mal Bien is a project that started in 2016, with its team traveling across Mexico to find traditional producers like the Morales family and bottle their spirits under one label. Reviewers find intense lemongrass up front, one calling it lemongrass candy, and one reviewer thinks it shines brightest in a Margarita; it is just as good in a Paloma or a mezcal and soda with lime.
