Masahiro Okinawa Gin Recipe 01
Masahiro Okinawa Gin Recipe 01 comes from Masahiro Shuzo, an Okinawan distillery founded in 1882 that has spent well over a century making awamori, the island's traditional koji-fermented rice spirit. This gin is distilled from that awamori on the distillery's pot stills, possibly the first awamori-based gin ever made, and flavored with six botanicals endemic to Okinawa: goya (bitter melon), guava leaf, roselle, shekwasha citrus, long pepper and juniper. It is bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof).
88 Bamboo described a green peppery nose reminiscent of sansho with a dry sake-like rice aroma, then roselle, black tea and rose water on the palate with finger lime, unripe yuzu and starfruit, and a clean, crisp menthol-and-peppermint finish. The awamori base gives it a silky, almost glutinous texture that is thicker than most gins, making it lovely neat and outstanding in a highball with soda and a wedge of lime.
