Masut Vineyard and Winery was started by brothers Ben and Jake Fetzer, grandsons of Barney Fetzer, who built Fetzer Vineyards. Their father, Robert Fetzer, bought a 1,200-acre property in the early 1990s and named it Masut, a Native American word meaning dark, rich earth. The family planted Pinot Noir on the mountainous ranch, and their efforts eventually led to the Eagle Peak Mendocino County appellation, where Masut is the only winery. The estate sits near the headwaters of the Russian River and is farmed organically, with one vineyard on the lower slopes and another perched high on the ridge. Bottled at 14.9% alcohol, this Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir shows intense red and dark fruit with hints of vanilla and anise, and a plush texture. Dried red cherry and currant flavors meet spice and cedary accents, and the finish is savory with good cut. It is a richer, more structured style of Pinot Noir from a remote mountain site. Pair it with roast lamb, grilled duck breast or a mushroom and thyme tart. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
