Matsui is known for maturing whisky in uniquely Japanese woods, and this release ages its single malt in casks made of sakura, the Japanese cherry tree, for five years before bottling a single cask at 48% ABV in a 700ml bottle.
Cherry wood gives the whisky a delicate, distinctly Japanese character: soft floral notes and a hint of cherry blossom on the nose, a smooth palate where the malt's honey and vanilla meet the gentle sweetness and light spice of the sakura cask, and a clean, elegant finish.
