McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt is one of the pioneers of American single malt, first released in the 1990s by Clear Creek Distillery in Portland, Oregon, the fruit-brandy house founded by Steve McCarthy. It is made in the Islay style from peat-malted barley imported from Scotland, distilled in a copper pot still and aged in Oregon oak. This 6 Year Old edition is bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof) in a 750ml bottle, an older and bolder version of the original three-year release.
The nose is peat smoke, honey and toasted grain, and the palate is velvety with vanilla, caramel and oak wrapped around a gentle, campfire smokiness that never turns harsh. The finish is long and warming. It regularly wins blind tastings against Scotch of similar age, and it is a must for peat lovers curious about what American distillers can do with smoke.
