Mezcalero No. 24 San Luis del Río Mezcal
Mezcalero No. 24 is one numbered, single-batch release from the Mezcalero series, conceived by Ansley Coale of Craft Distillers in California, developed with Destilería Los Danzantes, and first released in 2009. Each Mezcalero bottling comes from one mezcalero and one batch, is numbered, and is never repeated, so the series works as a tour of individual producers. Release No. 24 was hand-distilled in October 2016 by Don Baltazar Cruz Gonzales in San Luis del Río, a small Oaxacan village with a long reputation for mezcal. It is an ensamble of two agaves: wild tepextate (Agave marmorata), a slow-growing maguey that can take well over a decade to mature and is prized for its intense, green, floral character, and hillside espadín (Agave angustifolia), which the producer describes as fruity and soft, the perfect backdrop for the intense tepextate. Only 768 bottles were produced, bottled at 46.4% ABV. Once this release is gone, there will not be another No. 24. Pour it neat in a copita or a small wine glass at room temperature, and let it sit for a few minutes before sipping to open up the tepextate.
