Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye is one of the most limited releases in the Michter's range and, by many accounts, the benchmark for aged American rye. Michter's traces its roots to Shenk's, America's first whiskey company, founded in Pennsylvania in 1753, and rye was that company's original product. The 10 Year Rye was pulled from the market for nearly three years before then-Master Distiller Willie Pratt approved its return in April 2014, and it has been released in tightly limited single-barrel batches ever since.
Bottled at 92.8 proof from a single barrel, it comes from Michter's Louisville operation. Breaking Bourbon gave the 2023 release a perfect 5 out of 5, calling it the king of rye whiskeys: crème brûlée with sweet and savory baking spices on the nose, toffee, orange rind, vanilla, oak, bubble gum and pastry on a remarkably creamy palate, and a finish that moves from red fruit and buttercream to graham cracker, maple and rye spice, describing it as an impeccable rye that everyone should seek out.
