Mortlach 16 Year Old Distiller's Dram comes from "The Beast of Dufftown," a Speyside distillery founded in 1823 whose bizarre 2.81-times distillation through six mismatched stills and worm-tub condensers produces the meatiest, most muscular unpeated spirit in Scotland. Long a secret weapon inside Johnnie Walker, Mortlach was relaunched as a single malt by Diageo, and the 16 Year is its sherried heart.
Matured in a combination of first-fill sherry and bourbon casks and bottled at 86.8 proof, it offers sweet sherry, raisin, sharp orange and lime peel and a briny, savory umami on the nose with almond and toast, then a smooth, full palate of dark chocolate, espresso, dried fruit and spice with the brooding, meaty depth Mortlach is famous for, finishing long and gently warming. Drinkhacker graded it a B+. A serious Speyside for drinkers who want weight and complexity, and a fine alternative to GlenDronach or Macallan.
