Mount Veeder Winery Reserve Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
Mount Veeder Winery was founded in 1973 by Michael and Arlene Bernstein, who planted Bordeaux varieties high in the Mayacamas Mountains above Napa Valley years before the Mount Veeder AVA was established in 1990, pioneering the idea that rugged, high-elevation terrain could produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. Longtime winemaker Janet Myers, who joined in the early 2000s, built the house style around the AVA's steep, sparse, rocky volcanic and sedimentary soils, which yield tiny berries with thick skins and deep concentration. The Reserve is the winery's top bottling, a selection of the best estate and mountain-grown lots on Mount Veeder, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, and aged roughly 20 months in French oak barrels, the majority new, before bottling at about 14.5% ABV. Expect a powerful, dense mountain Cabernet of blackberry, cassis, black plum and blueberry, graphite, crushed rock, dark chocolate, cedar and dried herbs, with structured, chalky tannins and a long, mineral finish that rewards a decant now and 15 to 20 years of cellar time. Pair with braised beef, venison or lamb. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
