Neyers Placida Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
Neyers Vineyards is a Napa Valley winery that buys grapes from select growers for its Pinot Noir, and the Placida Vineyard bottling comes from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. The vineyard is planted to a Joseph Swan selection that tends to produce very small berries and clusters, and its fine, sandy soil is credited with shaping the wine's character. At the winery, fruit is hand-picked into small bins and hand-sorted, and Neyers ages its wines in French barrels made to its specifications from wood air-dried for three years. Bottled at 13.6% alcohol, the wine is lighter and more delicate than many Russian River wines, with the beautiful perfume and silky texture that the winemaker highlights, and the fine tannins and bright acidity typical of the vintage. Expect red cherry and floral notes with a gentle earthy undertone. It matches well with roasted chicken, seared salmon, duck breast and wild mushroom dishes, and its restraint makes it a good choice for a holiday table.
