Nikaido Mugi Shochu Dodgers Edition
The Dodgers Edition of Nikaido Oita Mugi Shochu carries an exclusive label in Dodger Blue, released after Nikaido Shuzo and the Los Angeles Dodgers announced a partnership in February 2025 naming Nikaido the Official Shochu of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the first shochu poured at a Major League ballpark. Inside the bottle is the same 100% barley shochu that made the brand: Nikaido Shuzo was founded in 1866 in Hiji-machi, Oita, as a sake brewery, moved to shochu in 1949, and in the early 1970s sixth-generation president Akira Nikaido developed a method for making koji entirely from barley. The first 100% mugi shochu was released in 1974 and drove the growth of what is now Japan's most popular spirit category; 99.6% of Oita shochu is barley-based today. Vacuum distillation preserves the delicate floral aromas, and the producer describes the spirit as smooth, crisp and bright with a richly aromatic fruity barley heart. Bottled at 24% ABV in a 900ml bottle, it is served neat, on the rocks or as the Nikaido highball with soda and lemon, as at the Dodger Stadium bars where it is poured.
