Old Overholt 4 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey
Old Overholt 4 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey is the classic bartender's rye, and the direct descendant of the whiskey Abraham Overholt began making on his farm in West Overton, Pennsylvania in 1810. That makes Old Overholt the oldest continuously maintained whiskey brand in America. It survived Prohibition as one of a handful of medicinal whiskeys and is now produced by Beam Suntory at the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky.
This is the standard expression, a Kentucky straight rye aged a minimum of four years and bottled at 86 proof. It has the signature rye pepper and grain character up front, with caramel, vanilla and light oak behind it, and Beam's familiar nutty sweetness in the finish. Old Overholt has been a house rye in American bars for more than a century, the bottle Doc Holliday was said to favor and the one countless Sazeracs and Manhattans have been built on. At this price it is one of the best values in rye, and a bottle every home bar should keep on hand for mixing.
