Old Pulteney 18 Year Old comes from "the Maritime Malt," distilled in Wick on the far northeastern tip of Scotland since 1826, when the town was Europe's busiest herring port and the distillery could only be reached by sea. Owned by Inver House, Pulteney is famous for a briny, coastal character shaped by its unusual flat-topped still and its position a few hundred yards from the North Sea.
Matured for at least eighteen years in American oak ex-bourbon casks and Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks, and bottled at 92 proof, non-chill-filtered, it is rich and aromatic: vanilla, honey and dried fruit on the nose with a lick of sea salt and brine, then a full, velvety palate of toffee, caramel, butterscotch and dark chocolate with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, finishing long, warming and gently spicy with a maritime tang.
