It is uncommon for amari to include mountain berries, making Pasubio particularly distinctive. The mugo pine (pinus mugo), which grows on rocky, high-altitude slopes, is a key ingredient in the liqueur. Its buds and young cones are harvested from the wild in the spring and allowed to dry in the sun over the summer and fall. Like many alpine plants, the mugo pine has a long history as both a medicinal herb and a flavoring for amari, eau-de-vie, and liqueur.
