Patz & Hall Pisoni Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
Patz & Hall, founded in 1988, is known for single-vineyard Pinot Noir, and this release highlights Pisoni Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. Pisoni is a 45-acre hillside planting at roughly 1,300 feet, divided into small blocks that follow the contours of the mountain, with granite and sandstone soils that tend to produce deeply colored, concentrated wines. Bottled at 15.0% alcohol, this is a big, ripe, extroverted style. Wine Spectator, which gave it 91 points, found singed anise and dried fruitcake notes around a core of boysenberry and mulberry, with a brambly finish. Expect a dense, flattering palate with dark berry fruit, warm baking spice and supple tannins rather than a lean, high-toned profile. It drinks well now and should hold for several more years. Pair it with duck breast, roast chicken with sauteed mushrooms, or charcuterie with brie and prosciutto. A strong choice for fans of full-throttle Central Coast Pinot Noir. 750ml bottle.
