Patz & Hall builds its reputation on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, working closely with growers so that each site shows through in the glass. The Sanchietti Vineyard bottling comes from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, a region where morning fog and cool evenings preserve acidity while the grapes ripen slowly. It is bottled at 14.2% alcohol and shows the classic Russian River profile of ruby color, black cherry and raspberry fruit, a little baking spice and a touch of earth. The body is medium and the acidity stays fresh, so the wine feels balanced rather than heavy, and a few years of bottle age have helped the tannins relax into the fruit. It drinks well with roasted duck, seared salmon, wild mushroom risotto or a herb-crusted pork loin. Serve it at cellar temperature and give it a short decant if you want the aromatics to open fully.
