Peerless Barrel Aged Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey comes from Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company in Louisville, a family distillery revived in 2014 by Corky Taylor and his son Carson, more than a century after Corky's great-grandfather Henry Kraver ran the original Peerless in Henderson, Kentucky. Peerless does everything the expensive way: sweet mash instead of sour mash, a low barrel entry proof of 107 to pull more flavor from the wood, and bottling at barrel proof with no chill filtration.
This rye is bottled at 107 proof, and Peerless describes a well-balanced rye bolstered by sweet tones of maple, brown sugar and light citrus, finishing with a hint of oak and no burn on the throat. The sweet-mash process gives Peerless whiskeys a distinctive rounded, fruit-forward character that sets them apart from the typical peppery Kentucky rye, and the low entry proof means the barrel does more of the work. Peerless was among the first Kentucky craft distilleries to earn national attention for its rye, and each batch is micro-blended from just a handful of barrels.
