Penelope Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey
Penelope Bourbon was founded in 2018 in Rumson, New Jersey by Mike Paladini, who named it after his daughter, with Danny Polise as co-founder and master blender; the brand grew fast enough that MGP, the Lawrenceburg, Indiana distillery that makes its whiskey, bought the company in 2023. Penelope's signature is a four-grain blend built from three separate MGP straight bourbon mash bills: a high-rye bourbon at 21% rye, a wheated bourbon at 45% wheat, and a 99% corn bourbon, which together land at roughly 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye and 3% malted barley. Barrel Strength is that same blend left uncut: each barrel is aged at least four years, and the batches are bottled without dilution, with most batches landing around 116 proof (58% ABV), the exact figure printed on each label. It is the proof-hunter's version of the 80-proof flagship, and what you lose in polish you gain in intensity. Reviewers describe brown sugar, cinnamon and allspice on the nose, a sweeter-than-expected palate of cherry, apricot and soft red pepper from the rye, and a finish of table syrup, raisin and mint. A good pour for a big Old Fashioned, or neat with a splash of water.
