Pinhook Tiz Rye Time 7 Year Rye Whiskey is the fourth release in Pinhook's Vertical Series, the nine-year project that follows a single lot of 450 Indiana rye barrels as they age from four to twelve years. Each spring Pinhook blends a new batch from the same stock and sets the proof to suit the whiskey at that age, and the 7 Year, released in March 2023, was drawn from 28 barrels and bottled at 105.12 proof.
The rye is made from the 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill. Breaking Bourbon rated it 3 out of 5 and called the series an easy one to recommend for delivering an above-average sip year after year, noting the 7 Year swings back toward fruit: light charred oak, vanilla syrup, summer fruit salad, caramel, orange rind and pine on the nose, a syrupy, caramel-and-summer-fruit palate with subtle rye spice and chewy oak, and a noticeably dry finish of rye spice, leather and peppercorn. Lined up against the 5 and 6 Year, it shows exactly how oak starts to take over as rye passes the seven-year mark.
