Plantation Extreme Series 15 Year Barbados Rum

Plantation, now renamed Planteray, is the rum house of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac producer that also owns a stake in the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which it bought in 2017. The Extreme series is Ferrand's showcase for the oldest, most intense single-vintage rums it holds, bottled at cask strength with zero dosage, and this is Extreme No. 5: a 2007 West Indies Rum Distillery vintage distilled from molasses on both the Gregg pot still and a column still, in the old Barbadian two-still style. It was aged first on the island, then shipped to Ferrand's cellars in Cognac for continental aging that included more than two years in ex-Ferrand Cognac casks, and bottled fifteen years after distillation at 58% ABV (116 proof), with no sugar and no coloring, in a run of 2,856 bottles worldwide. Tasters consistently pick up coconut and vanilla, warm chocolate, dried fruit, spice and citrus, with the Cognac wood showing through the Barbados base. It is a collector's bottle from a series that doesn't repeat, and one of the few Barbados rums of this age available at full strength; a small drop of water opens it up.
