Plantation Jamaica Clarendon MSP 2007 Rum
Plantation, now renamed Planteray, is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house of Alexandre Gabriel, which buys aged rum from distilleries across the tropics and gives it a second maturation in its own cellars in the Charente; Ferrand also holds a stake in Clarendon itself through its share of National Rums of Jamaica. Clarendon Distillery sits on the Monymusk sugar estate in Clarendon parish in southern Jamaica, and MSP is one of its pot-still marques, each marque being a distinct fermentation-and-distillation recipe with its own ester level. This is a One-Time Limited Edition built from 28 casks of MSP distilled in 2007, aged fifteen years between Jamaica and France, and bottled at 48.4% ABV. The published notes run through banana, toasted coconut, vanilla, molasses and raisin, with lime zest and cut grass, burnt sugar and a streak of tar, the hallmarks of mid-ester Jamaican pot still rum that long aging has rounded into something rich rather than wild. The IWSC praised its depth and harmony with ripe banana and zesty lime persisting on the finish, and Drinkhacker called it a perfect base for an elevated cocktail. Sip it neat, or build the best Mai Tai you've made.
