Plantation Panama 2010 is a One-Time Limited Edition from Maison Ferrand, released in 2023 as a 13-year-old vintage rum that was produced once and will not be repeated. It was distilled in 2010 at the Don José distillery in Panama, the home of Varela Hermanos, from molasses fermented for two days and run through column stills in the light, clean Panamanian style. Alexandre Gabriel selected 22 barrels, and the rum followed Plantation's double-aging model: eight years in 200-liter ex-bourbon casks in Panama's tropical heat, then five more years in 350-liter Ferrand casks in the cooler cellars of southwest France. It is bottled at 51.4% ABV (102.8 proof) with zero dosage, meaning no added sugar and no caramel coloring. The producer's notes run fresh coconut, dill, plum, nectarine, citrus, almond, cinnamon, vanilla, honey and sesame on the nose; pear, berries, orange and fig layered with butterscotch, coffee, black pepper and custard on the palate; and a long, dry finish of coconut, banana, tobacco, baking spice, chocolate and licorice. Panamanian rum is usually bottled young and soft, so a 13-year cask-strength expression with no sweetening is a rare look at what the style can do.
