Pōkeno Single Cask No. 71 is a single cask release from Pōkeno Whisky Company, the young distillery in the Waikato region south of Auckland that has quickly become New Zealand's most talked-about whisky maker. This cask of single malt spent four years in a Pedro Ximénez sherry cask, drawing deep color and dessert-like richness from the wood, before bottling at cask strength, 56.5% ABV, in a 700ml bottle. Single casks from Pōkeno are released in tiny numbers and rarely reach the United States.
The whisky is deep amber, with raisins, figs and velvety toffee on the nose, plus dark chocolate and toasted oak. The palate brings toffee and caramel, ripe plum and dates with gentle PX spice, and the finish is long and warm with dark chocolate and oak. New Zealand's mild, humid climate gives the spirit real maturity at four years. A collector's bottle for fans of sherried whisky.
