Pōkeno Exploration Series No. 02 Winter Malt comes from Pōkeno Whisky Company in New Zealand's Waikato region, the distillery founded by Scotch industry veteran Matt Johns. The Exploration Series is where Pōkeno experiments, and Winter Malt is a richer, darker take on the house style, built for cold evenings and matured in casks that bring spice and dried fruit to the fore. Bottled at 48% ABV, non chill-filtered, in a 700ml bottle.
It pours a rich amber, with warm spices, honey, dark fruit and oak on the nose. The palate is velvety and full, layering dried fruit, toffee and marzipan with baking spice and a comforting warmth, and the finish is long with oak and a hint of dark chocolate. It is the kind of whisky that makes a good fireside companion and a strong argument for New Zealand as a serious whisky nation.
