Port Askaig 25 Year Old is the elder statesman of the cult Islay range from independent bottler Elixir Distillers, named for the ferry port on the island's northeast coast and drawn from an undisclosed distillery that whisky lovers have long identified as the big peated malt made just up the road. Master blender Oliver Chilton selected casks that had rested a full quarter century on the island for this rare release.
Bottled at 91.6 proof (45.8% ABV), non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, it pours a deep, burnished amber and offers brine, salt and sea spray with delicate whispers of peat smoke, dried fruit, oak and spice on the nose, then a velvety, silky palate of softened smoke, honeyed sweetness, dark chocolate, dried fruit and oak, finishing grand and enduring with warmth, spice and the sea.
