Port Askaig 8 Year Old is the entry point to the cult Islay range from independent bottler Elixir Distillers, named for the ferry port on the island's northeast coast. The distillery is never disclosed, but whisky lovers have long pointed to the big peated malt made just up the road, and master blender Oliver Chilton selects casks that show the classic clean, coastal style of Islay's north shore.
Bottled at 91.6 proof (45.8% ABV), non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, it offers lemon zest, cereal, oyster shell, smoked butter and a yeasty freshness on the nose, then an oily, briny palate of ash, beach pebbles, fennel seed, kelp and Meyer lemon, finishing medium-long with smoked apple, ginger, caramel and almond. Words of Whisky scored it 8.5 out of 10. A superb-value Islay malt for fans of Caol Ila and a bright, salty alternative to the heavier south-coast peaters.
