Project Optimist Whiskey for Displaced People Cask 1A5
Whiskey for Displaced People is a purpose-driven blended whiskey series from Project Optimist, a collective of spirits-industry veterans run by the team at WellSpun Consulting (Will Schragis, Celia Erickson, Eli Dreyfus, Stefanie Bair and Jay West) whose other creations include Covalle Tomato-Water Gin, Youthful Porpoise and Alternate Current. The project pledges its first $10,000 of first-year revenue to refugee relocation assistance in upstate New York, where the whiskey is bottled. The first edition is a study in barrel finishing across 13 unique marrying casks: two base blends of American whiskeys aged 9 to 16 years were rested in reconditioned sherry barrels for roughly four months, then each micro-blend moved to its own tertiary finishing cask for about six months before being bottled individually at cask strength. Cask 1A5 is built on base blend A, a mix of 60% bourbon, 20% rye, 15% light whiskey and 5% wheat whiskey, and is a highly limited bottling; the sibling cask 1A4 was bottled at 62.5% ABV in 700ml, with Pedro Ximénez sherry resting and a Calvados finish. The producer describes the series as high proof and bold.
