Puncher's Chance is the bourbon brand of Wolf Spirit Distillery in Eugene, Oregon, founded in 2017 by Umberto Luchini after seventeen years at Campari, where he had risen to chief marketing officer before leaving in his late forties to start his own company. The Left Cross, released in November 2022, is the oldest bottling in the line: a 14-year-old straight bourbon from a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% malted barley, and 8% rye, aged in new American oak in wood rickhouses, then finished for two to six months in freshly emptied casks that had held 12-year-old Jamaican rum, bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV). It was produced through IJW Whiskey Company of Louisville under master distiller Kevin Curtis and master blender Stephen Hughes, in a run of 70 barrels and about 2,000 bottles at a suggested $150. Wolf Spirit describes the aged bourbon and the Jamaican rum funk coexisting rather than fighting. Drinkhacker rated it A- and found a caramel-soda aroma, a crisp palate of soft cereal, semi-sweet chocolate, mint, burnt marshmallow, and cinnamon tea with lemon peel, and a finish of spicy mint and cinnamon that closes on leather and vanilla. A sipper for rum-cask fans.
