Quiereme Mucho Tepextate Mezcal
Quiéreme Mucho is a Oaxacan mezcal brand built around maestro mezcalero Wilibaldo Rodríguez, who makes every expression at his palenque in San Pedro Taviche, in the Ocotlán de Morelos district south of Oaxaca City, a region known for wild agave rather than farmed espadín. The Tepextate is made from 100% wild Agave marmorata, a cliff-growing maguey that takes 19 to 25 years to mature and is among the hardest agaves to harvest, which is why tepextate mezcal is both scarce and expensive. Rodríguez cooks the piñas in a traditional earth pit, hand-crushes the roasted agave rather than running it through a mechanical mill, ferments naturally, and distills in small batches, bottling without adjustment at 45% to 47% ABV depending on the batch (this bottling lists 46%). The producer's notes describe aromas of fresh herbs and root vegetables, a floral palate with pollen and lavender, and a wet, earthy finish, the classic tepextate profile of green pepper and wildflower that reviewers on Mezcal Reviews echo with notes of jalapeño, citrus, orange, and wild honey. Wild-agave mezcal at this level is for sipping neat from a copita or veladora, taken slowly with a little orange and sal de gusano on the side.
