Thirty years ago I tasted, for the only time in my life, apricot brandy. I was hiking in the Himalayas and stayed a night in a village called Marta, where apricots were the local crop. It seemed like the most delicious thing I’d ever tasted. Since then, I’ve looked for apricot brandy but only found the syrupy cheap stuff on bottom shelves, artificially flavored crap. Finally, sufficient sleuthing led me to Jelinek Apricot Brandy—real Apricot Brandy! But it was selling for $55 a bottle in an Oregon liquor store—just too expensive. One internet search later, I discovered a bottle for $21 available in Chip’s Liquor. Even with the delivery charge it was a reasonable price. The brandy was as delicious as I remembered. It’s a dry brandy with a clear but not overwhelming apricot taste, a perfect autumn weather warming of the throat.
