Raising Glasses is an American independent bottler run by Lorri and John, a husband-and-wife pair of longtime Scotch collectors who now select their own casks of rum and whisky and bottle them in 375ml under their own label, and Burlesque is their single cask from Roulaison Distilling in New Orleans. Roulaison distills from molasses on a pot still, and this batch went through a 90-day fermentation the distillery describes as accidental, which is roughly ten times longer than a standard rum ferment and the reason the spirit carries so much fruit and funk into the barrel. It was aged seven years in a cask that previously held Cabernet and Zinfandel red wine, then bottled by Raising Glasses at cask strength, 58.3% ABV, with no sugar, color or other additives, in a run of 339 bottles. The bottler's own notes read like the name: mulled wine, cherry cough drops, Red Hots cinnamon candy, flan custard and candied orange peel, a rum that drinks closer to a wine-finished whiskey than to anything from the Caribbean.
