Rare Cane Special Cask Series Jamaica Pot Still Rum
Rare Cane is a newer American independent bottler, and its Special Cask Series Jamaica Pot Still Rum is built on distillate from Worthy Park, the St. Catherine estate that makes some of the island's most sought-after high-ester pot still rum from its own molasses. After aging, the rum was finished in Madeira-style California wine barrels and bottled at 68% ABV, with an outturn of 1,400 bottles, the widest distribution of any Rare Cane release so far. No age statement is given. Kevin Crossman of Ultimate Mai Tai, who tastes more Jamaican rum than almost anyone writing about tiki, calls it funky and a total flavor bomb, darker in color than Two James's Dr. Bird (which uses the same Worthy Park source), more approachable than Dr. Bird's Moscatel sherry cask bottling and showing more traditional barrel-aging character. His Mai Tai made with it ranked number one in his mid-2025 rankings, and he suggests a quarter ounce of vanilla syrup in place of demerara to lean into the Madeira finish. At 68% it's an overproof meant for cocktails, where a small pour carries a whole drink, though it rewards a careful neat sip with water for anyone who loves Worthy Park's banana-and-ester funk.
