Rare Character Brook Hill 15 Year Rye Whiskey
Brook Hill has one of the more remarkable survival stories in American whiskey: originally distilled in late 19th-century Kentucky by Joseph L. Friedman, it earned the rare distinction of lawful production straight through Prohibition, back when almost every other brand in the country went dark. Rare Character revived the nameplate in 2024 as the vehicle for its most extraordinary single barrel finds — whiskeys with ages the standard lineup's batch releases can't accommodate. Each barrel is bottled uncut, unfiltered, at natural cask strength, and given its own codename; this 15-year-old straight rye carries the codename "Music City," bottled at 115.5 proof (57.75% ABV). Heavy rye grain rarely survives fifteen years in new charred oak without the wood taking over completely, and this one wrestles right back. The nose brings dense pumpernickel bread and candied citrus, followed by cinnamon, camphor, and a faint ribbon of saltwater taffy. The palate delivers a serious wave of oak tannin, sharp black pepper, clove, and burnt sugar. The finish stays bone dry and long, dropping heat alongside crushed mint, leather, and charred barrel wood. This is a patient sipper, best suited to a slow glass and a big steak.
