Ratu Fijian Extra Aged 5Yr Dark Rum
Ratu is the premium rum line of the Rum Co. of Fiji, which distills everything it makes at the South Pacific Distillery in Lautoka, the only rum distillery on Fiji, in operation since 1980 and also home to the Bati and Bounty rums. The name Ratu means chief in Fijian, and the brand has been on the market since 2016. This Extra Aged Dark Rum is made from molasses from Fiji's local sugar cane, aged five years in oak barrels in the island's warm, humid climate, brought down to 40% ABV with local spring water and filtered through coconut shell carbon before bottling. The Fat Rum Pirate, one of the more demanding rum reviewers in the UK, described the nose as pungent and heavy on molasses and caramel with vegetal notes and a touch of menthol, and found the palate smooth and easy-drinking with molasses, pineapple, banana and a vegetal edge, with a gentle, soft finish; his hydrometer reading suggested the rum is not dosed with sugar despite its dark color. He rated it as a rum that drinks best mixed: a five-year-old dark rum built for a rum and cola, a ginger beer highball or a tiki drink.
